Thermal electron periodicities at 20RS in Saturn’s magnetosphere

چکیده
[1] Cassini fields and particles observations show clear evidence of periodic phenomena in Saturn’s magnetosphere. Periodicities have been observed in kilometric radio emissions, total electron density (in the inner magnetosphere), magnetic fields, and energetic particles (in the outer magnetosphere). In this letter the first analysis of periodicities in thermal electron densities in Saturn’s outer magnetosphere are presented. Plasma sheet electron densities and temperatures at 20 ± 2 RS in Saturn’s magnetosphere are studied and examined as a function of SLS3 longitude. Evidence for a density minimum at 170 is presented which is in excellent agreement with total electron density results in the 3–5 RS range. The density asymmetry is interpreted as the result of a periodic plasma sheet motion where the northward offset of the plasma sheet varies with longitude hence producing a density modulation in the equatorial plane. The effect of magnetospheric compressions on the dayside density asymmetry are discussed. Citation: Arridge, C. S., N. André, N. Achilleos, K. K. Khurana, C. L. Bertucci, L. K. Gilbert, G. R. Electron sources in Saturn’s magnetosphere
[1] We investigate the sources of two different electron components in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere (5 < L < 12 Rs) by performing phase space density (f(v)) analyses of electron measurements made by the Cassini CAPS instrument (1 eV to 28 keV). Because pitch angle distributions indicate that the traditional single particle invariants of gyration and bounce are not appropriate, we use a formulat...
متن کاملSputtering of ice grains and icy satellites in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere
Icy grains and satellites orbiting in Saturn’s magnetosphere are immersed in a plasma that sputters their surfaces. This limits the lifetime of the E-ring grains and ejects neutrals that orbit Saturn until they are ionized and populate its magnetosphere. Here we reevaluate the sputtering rate of ice in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere using the recent Cassini data on the plasma ion density, tempera...
متن کاملDriving Saturn’s magnetospheric periodicities from the upper atmosphere/ionosphere: Magnetotail response to dual sources
[1] Despite the high degree of axial symmetry of Saturn’s internal magnetic field, rotationassociated periodicities are evident in Saturn’s electromagnetic radiation, its magnetic perturbations and its particle populations. Although close to the mean rotation period of the cloud tops, the electromagnetic period drifts slightly over a time scale of years and, at high latitudes, differs for sourc...
متن کاملCassini observations of the variation of Saturn’s ring current parameters with system size
[1] We have examined residual magnetic field vectors observed in Saturn’s magnetosphere during the first 2 years of the Cassini mission and have fit them to a simple axisymmetric model of the ring current in the middle magnetosphere. We then examine the variations of the ring current parameters with size of the magnetosphere. In addition, we obtain secondary parameters, including the value of t...
متن کاملDriving Saturn’s magnetospheric periodicities from the upper atmosphere/ionosphere
[1] Saturn’s magnetospheric structure and the intensity of radio frequency emissions from its immediate surroundings are modulated at close to the planet’s rotation period. Analogous rotation-modulated variations at Jupiter are readily interpreted as effects of the non-axisymmetric intrinsic magnetic field. At Saturn, to the contrary, the high level of axial symmetry in the intrinsic field sugg...
